Consciousness: the Only Route to Freedom
Science has not defined consciousness but it knows it exists; that it is the little-understood phenomenon of the universe. On a simple level, consciousness means being awake to a stimulus; the opposite of a coma or oblivion. Thoughts traverse our minds at what some researchers have suggested is a rate of about 60,000 thoughts a day: until we access the awareness beneath and beyond thought, we remain asleep, disconnected from the spirit that keeps us alive.
Einstein wrote that: “A human being is a part of a whole, called by us ‘universe’, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest … a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty.“
Teilhard de Chardin foresaw the harnessing of Love, or Compassion, the stuff of the universe, as a vital step in our evolution, vast in its implications, like a re-discovery of fire. When we bring the fuel of love into the arena of healing, we work directly with the field of Consciousness. We work with Awareness, with the Tao, with Spirit, or Compassion, or Krishna or Divinity or God. Or Divine Love. The high frequencies of this energy come from dimensions beyond our own limited, 3-dimensional world and penetrate the dense forms of our individual, time-and-space-bound physical reality, filling that separated aspect of who we are with the Light of Source.
We could say that Consciousness with a capital ‘C’ thus penetrates and interacts with consciousness with a lower-case ‘c’ – in other words with the personal awareness that develops on an inner level through the experience of separation which is at the heart of physical life. This dynamic, conscious interchange between the wider field of Existence and the localized field of the individual brings about accelerated movement and growth. Like clean water poured into what has become silted, this exchange brings to the surface of our awareness those issues which have been judged, rejected, denied, unloved, prompting us to understand and integrate them. It also awakens our hidden and dormant potential. To work with consciousness is to transcend the wounds of the past and climb out of the emotional prisons that have constrained us. It is the only route to freedom.
